Canvey Island cds, tapes and vinyl: Euro 2012 Special!

As part of our Euro 2012 special stuff we’ve invited the three lions to board the Bifurcated Train. With the help of our previous guests we’ve picked them out some of our favourite England related songs to inspire them in Poland and Ukraine. Yes, this kind of blog fodder has been done on numerous occasions before, but when has the use of cliche stopped us in the past? Here’s the train now…

The conductor held out his hand to lead them to the platform, as it was the Euros and all, they didn’t need any money, this trip was on the house.
There was only the one train waiting to depart, there was only one destination …

Canvey Island!

As the three lions got off the train they were shoved towards the  car park and the now familiar wonder of the car-boot sale with the stall, run this time by someone who looked suspiciously like ex-Manchester United and England captain Bryan “Robbo” Robson!

As the story goes, the character has a message: “Welcome to Canvey Island cds, tapes and vinyl. I’ve got to shift all these for a friend of a friend after a miscommunication over buying a football club with a big brown envelope of money (*Cripes*), anyhow, won’t bore you with the detail, it’s just a cheap joke at my expense really. We have every England single ever pressed or recorded in stock, and you can enjoy our favourites, that have been picked for you?!”

… And this is what we chose to show them …

Stop Crying Your Heart Out by Oasis

Picked by En Lim. Not an official England song, but became synonymous with the team after being over-used as dramatic montage music during the 2002 World Cup.

Diamond Lights by Glenn and Chris

Picked by Des Flannelly. Being Irish, Des thinks that this 1987 hit parade classic (?!)  is a more appropriate representation of an England football song.  *Stares at floor*

Vindaloo by Fat Les

Picked by Rachel. Written for the 1998 World Cup. Had a chart battle with a re-released Three Lions and lost. No surprise that Keith Allen was involved, again.

All Together Now by The Farm

Picked by Lucy. Apparently an unofficial song of the 1990 World Cup, but massively overshadowed by World In  Motion. This specially remixed version was adopted as the official Euro 2004 song.

Your Song performed by Ewan McGregor (from Moulin Rouge)

Picked by Adam Pinfold. Not an official song by any means, but used by The Beeb to accompany the goals montage after qualification for the World Cup 2002.

England’s Irie by Black Grape

Picked by Brett Atkinson. A bit off the radar for such an explicit England football song, due largely to the success of Three Lions. Written for the 1996 Euros, when “football came home”. Does Keith Allen always have to be involved?

Three Lions by The Lightning Seeds, Baddiel and Skinner

Picked by Joe Sharratt and Steph Doehler. Out of nowhere in 1996 came this, possibly the most fan friendly and pop chart friendly of England songs ever penned. One of the best. Remixed and used for various tournaments since.

World In Motion by New Order

Picked by Greg Theoharis. It really doesn’t get much better than the official 1990 World Cup song. There really was no need to bring out another England single ever again.

…and then we dropped the lions off at the airport to board the plane to the tournament, not before giving them a massive wedgie.
