Canvey Island cds, tapes and vinyl: Melissa Hollis

United fan Melissa Hollis (@mel1046) was off out into town, but as she was getting ready she spotted a strange train- station-shaped train station had appeared outside her window (I think we can guess what’s coming by now!).

The conductor handed Melissa a £1 coin and wagged his finger in the direction of the platform. There, of course, was only one train waiting to depart, there was only one destination …

Canvey Island!

Melissa got off the train and was ushered, like the others before her, towards the car park where she found the car-boot sale and the stall run this time by someone who looked suspiciously like ex-Manchester United and Al-Hilal player Andrei Kanchelskis.

As was the norm now with this surreal post, the character had a message: “Welcome to Canvey Island cds, tapes and vinyl. I’ve got to shift all these for a friend of a friend after a miscommunication over some plants(?), anyhow, won’t bore you with the detail, this kidnap scenario nonsense is confusing as it is … We have every single ever pressed or recorded in stock, and at 5 for £1, you can enjoy picking your 5 favourites of all time?!”

… and this is what Melissa picked and why (in her own words) …

Welcome To The Jungle By Guns N’ Roses

“I’ve been listening to this band for most of my life and they definitely have a big influence on the music I listen to today. This song in particular was a favourite of mine from a very young age ( I’m talking around 3 to 4 years old – lol) so it’s always been something I’ve enjoyed listening too. Some people may think it loses it’s edge after repeated listens, but for me it remains one of their best songs.”

Poison By Alice Cooper

“I could have picked a handful of his songs for this and part of me is annoyed that I’ve gone for one of his most well known songs, but it’s hard not to acknowledge how good a song it is. Even though I’ve listened to it a million times over I can’t bear pressing skip on my ipod when it comes on. Alice Cooper is definitely one of my favourite artists and it’s great that he’s still going on tour and releasing new material with his latest album Welcome 2 My Nightmare coming out late last year. Absolutely love his music and have definitely wrecked my ear drums listening to it.”

In The End By Linkin Park

“One of the “new metal” bands that I enjoy listening too. This song has always seemed to stick with me since I first heard it in school and even when I think I’m sick of it, once I hear the first few seconds of it I more often than not end up listening to the full song. Taken from the Hybrid Theory album, which in my opinion is still their best. I go through long periods of time without listening to this song or the album, but when I do it’s still just as good as when I first heard it.”

In The Shadows By The Rasmus

“This song came out of nowhere for me, never heard of the band before and it just came on one of the tv music channels I had on while doing some coursework. Some songs take a few plays to get into, but half way through listening to this the first time I was hooked. Ended up buying the album and loving the band though I must admit I haven’t heard anything recently. Don’t think they will ever top this song for me and I really need to get on the ipod again.”

Is This Love By Whitesnake

“Another band from the 80s which I love. I do feel like I was born in the wrong era sometimes!! Was tempted to pick a heavier song but I kept coming back to this one. Whitesnake do “love songs” so well. Lyrics are always spot on for me. I have to see this band on tour at some point!!! Also one of the reasons why I have an electric guitar in my room! If only I could learn how to play!”

Just before Melissa headed back to the platform the Andrei “look-a-like” stallholder pointed her in the direction of the old abandoned book stall and asks her to pick out a book, for free, for the journey home.

… And Melissa picked …

Evermore by Alyson Noel

“I haven’t really read a lot of books recently and would love to get back into it again. A few years back when I was on holiday and needed a book for the flight I bought Evermore which is part of a series of books called The Immortals. Ended up having to read the whole series. Maybe not very original but this is one of the better “paranormal romance” books. Actually wouldn’t mind reading it again to see if it’s still just as good. Would be a great movie!”

And then we dropped Melissa off back at her place, where she turned her ipod right up to maximum volume, and continued getting ready to head off into town.
