Cluj 1 – 2 United

It finally happened last night: It finally stopped being surreal for me to see RVP in a United shirt. Well, it’s still a “bit weird”. It’s got more than a lot to do with him being amazing. His finishing has blinded me to the strange dream like state I was in. And thank god for his finishing too.

It’s difficult to talk about these early European games without giving them their proper context. Fergie obviously wants to get through the group (like last year, eek) without exerting too much energy, or flexing too much squad muscle. But then we are still suffering from a lack of confidence in the competition and also struggling for form in general. It’s all a bit clunky. I think, under normal circumstances, Fergie is right at this stage to want to “just do enough” to get through (especially with the fortunate group draw we’ve had), however I think as we’re also in need of improvement overall, it wouldn’t be a bad thing to try and get that by competing properly in these games.

Anyway, the game…

Fletcher is *still in hushed tones – not to curse it* looking more and more like himself. The touches of quality, bursts of energy, and THAT reverse pass of his, that slices through the opposition midfield, are all evident. *Still everything crossed* As for the rest of the midfield – Andesron and TClevZ – the promise is there (as always), but they need to start showing they can move up the gears when called upon (I’ve definitely written that sentence before).

Aside from RVP… Rooney is Rooney is Rooney is Rooney (I can file that with Nani is Nani is Nani is Nani with my ‘top insights’). Well it’s true. David remarked on how Rooney was insisting on striking a “technique pose” after every pass. I then – for the remainder of the game –  couldn’t help but notice it too. Every time!

Chicha is looking a bit uncomfortable isn’t he? I never thought he’d be a player that would catalyse us though. If we’re playing well, Chicha will finish chances. If we’re not, he won’t. And I really wish Danny could find the net soon.

The defence doesn’t really bother me too much (injuries aside OBV). Rafa’s looking good so far. I still love Evra and Rio and Jonny Evans.

MOTM: RVP for THAT goal.

“There’s light at the end of the tunnel … it just might be a train”
