Multiversity is an ongoing DC comics series written by Grant Morrison. Every month sees a story in a different version of the DC universe (eg kids of the well-known heroes who have nothing to do because their parents created a utopia where the bad guys can never win) loosely tied around a seemingly haunted comic book. Footballiversity and the various numbered Footballiverses are a shameless rip-off of the comics device (found elsewhere too, of course) of using parallel universes when you have nothing else to write about, and is an idea that came to me while reading Multiversity, although in a parallel universe Grant Morrison got the idea from me.

Footballiversity Bumper Issue #1 – Footballiverse 8

The 2014 World Cup

Footballiverse 8 is a world in which football really is a gladiatorial sport. Elimination from the World Cup, the only soccer event that anyone cares about, means players are executed (banished to the Conference). The stakes are higher, the crowds are larger, the co-commentators are marginally less awful.

Group Stages

David Luiz, his patriotism enhanced by the threat of career death, ascends to the level of superhero. He develops lightning speed, which helps them beat Croatia, although then gains the ability to duplicate himself, which he does in Brazil’s second match, getting them eliminated from the competition for having too many players on the pitch. Luiz burrows to the centre of the earth and is not seen again, though gives an interview via morse code in 2035. Cameroon and Mexico progress.

In groups B and C, the same teams go through as in real life so as to save time: Netherlands, Chile, Colombia, Greece.

In group D, Costa Rica, their players largely in countries where the gulf between top league and non-league is not so great, do not benefit from the fear factor that boosts the performance of other nations. England still contrive to draw 0-0 against them. They had already beaten Italy and Uruguay though – the latter victory an automatic one as Suarez, getting carried away and thinking himself a real gladiator, turned up with a sword and throwing spear. Italy and England go through.

As with B and C, in the latter groups all of the same teams go through, apart from the USA who are replaced by Ghana in a confused but well received attempt by FIFA to further punish Suarez.

Knock-outs

Nothing of interest happens in the round of 16. Italy’s quarter-final against Colombia takes the form of a court case, as Colombia argue (successfully) that their opponent’s previous history in gladiatorial combat puts them at an unfair advantage. As the ‘match’ is going on, Neymar, back in Spain after Brazil’s elimination, finds himself absentmindedly drawing the iconic picture of Bane breaking Batman’s back, though for some reason draws his own face where Batman’s should be, and draws Bane in Colombian colours. He shivers, then goes back to training with his new team in a rubbish Spanish league.

The semi-finals are between Colombia, Germany, England, and Argentina. England’s stars are driven this far by not wanting to have to play against Luton, mainly.

Germany’s efficient and organised style of play displeases Emperor Blatter, who gives them a thumbs down. They are promptly executed on the spot. The other semi-final is a tie to end all ties, a mammoth battle between the English, who don’t wish to leave their life of luxury in the Best League in the World™, and Messi, who is so driven by the prospect of being executed to a non-league team that he gains the ability of an invincibility star in Super Mario. In the last minute, he wins a free-kick on the edge of the England box. He gains the Force and uses it to score an amazing goal, but midi-chlorians are found in his blood in a post-match drugs test and England are sent to the final in Argentina’s place.

England lose. Colombia win the World Cup. Wayne Rooney is dragged physically by shady FIFA officials to the Conference, screaming so hard that he becomes an orc, while Leighton Baines quits football to become a Gallagher brother.

————————————–

“‘Issue’ #2: Start of the season-December”, coming 18/2/15; “‘Issue’ #3: January”, coming 25/2/15; “‘Issue 4 etc': Appropriate Month”, on the first Wednesday after the end of the said appropriate month

We’re inviting some of our Twitter friends to share some of their ‘Pre’ and ‘Post Match’ thoughts with us from now on. You can still enjoy my nonsensical, confusing punctuation buffets, below their personal views on the game…

Iwan: (@Iwanlehnert)

Getting knocked out of any competition is never nice. For all the good it did us in 1999, getting knocked out of the FIFA Club World Cup was quite rubbish at the time. Losing isn’t particularly pleasant either, and losing having led three times before succumbing to a last-minute penalty and subsequent extra-time strikes is even worse, but I can’t help but not be too gutted about Wednesday’s result. I would have taken Sunday’s victory in the League over a Capital One Cup fourth round win any day of the week (and made up days, too, like Funsday). It’s a pain that Nani’s desire to show off caused us to lose the ball and the subsequent penalty, and the lapses shown by the back four were not comforting, but it’s still no disaster and it’s a result that’s a lot easier to swallow than last season’s tame surrender to Crystal Palace. We’ve lost out on a trophy and the chance to give further experience to some of our fringe and younger players, which is never positive. That can happen when you’re playing a team with as much quality as Chelsea, and we’ve paid for it.

We’ve got the chance to go top of the table if we beat Arsenal on Saturday. That doesn’t mean a whole helluva lot as we’re in November, but considering how flustered we’ve been when ahead in games this season, it could end up being quite counter-productive in a perverse way should Chelsea stumble at Swansea. There’s always something incredibly strange about stepping out with another team’s former golden child too, and if Van Persie happens to score tomorrow, I don’t expect him to celebrate it too much. Even if he doesn’t, I can’t see Arsenal being able to match us going forward at the minute. They’re more than capable of scoring, but they will need to be thoroughly solid from front to back in order to get a decent result. Considering their talent, they can cause us the same kind of problems that Spurs did, but even then, I don’t think their backline is strong enough to stop any combination of our forwards at the moment. Even without Rooney or Van Persie in midweek, we still scored four against Chelsea’s best available centre-back partnership. At the moment, scoring goals against us doesn’t seem to be much of a problem for any opposing team; scoring more than us is proving difficult.

From a personal perspective, I can’t wait for tomorrow. I last had tickets to a United match over eighteen months ago for the derby game settled by THAT goal. This is the longest time I’ve gone without attending a match in 7 years, but due to becoming a father and getting married, it’s been necessary. I’ve caught nigh-on every game either online or in a pub since, but it’s incomparable to actually being there. Even better when taking into consideration the fact that all of my in-laws are Arsenal fans….

Brett:

I know I’m going to sound a bit *tap-tap-curly-wurly-cockoo* here, but I think we could be on to replicate last year’s 8-2. Yeah. yeah, it’s unlikely, and oh yeah, it’s wholly disrespectful towards Arsenal (who are looking okay-ish this season) but no bad is gonna come from me making a ridiculous prediction. I’m doing it – you can’t stop me.

As previously stated, I’m avoiding repeating where possible in these things this season, so nothing new to add on us (technically telling you that is repeating). Arsenal are going to be more than okay this season, but that won’t help them in this game ;-0

This game is all about (O)RVP!

Prediction: 8-2

Goals: (O)RVP 3, Rooney 3, Koscielny O.G, Young.

The 1990 World Cup: a significant tournament in the bookmarking of some of England’s enduring imagery. Penalties, tears and John Barnes rap aside, one incident inparticular, during the semi-final against Germany, has, I think, been the one to have cast the darkest and spindliest of shadows over subsequent national players. But, oh how we larfed, until we cried; and then we were just crying.

Andreas Brehme was tired of being pigeon-holed as a “free-kick specialist”, he was much more than that he thought to himself, and so decided to just petulantly hoof the ball at one of the England players for lols. He didn’t want the ensuing scrap to ruffle his beautiful hair (GHDs weren’t invented back then), so he picked out Paul Parker, the littlest player on the pitch and took aim. Veteran, Peter Shilton (ever the opportunist), chose this moment to trial part of his stand-up routine, and more specifically, his walking down the comedy stairs backwards and drunk, gag. The ball looped in. A nation hung it’s head. A curse was birthed?!

(*huddle-in* Some people trace this “curse” back much further, to a Peter Bonetti error in 1970. I suppose in some way claiming the “curse” had been laying dormant since then; maybe in a pair of discarded gloves, or in nail clippings down the plug hole at Wembley perhaps, waiting to lay claim to it’s next victim. However, that kind of nonsense can only get you in the loony bin. If we’re really seriously talking about me talking about “curses” in the mainstream, you have to let me do it my way. I need to place them in a context a bit more plausible … namely, psychology *fall-back*)

Since the Shilton bomb dropped, we have witnessed a succession of England Number Ones apparently paralysed on the bigger stages by this hand-me-down trauma. David Seaman was the only one that almost got away with it. Despite having serial cutlery-molester, Uri Gellar watching his back (he who moved the ball from the penalty spot against Scotland at Euro 96 with his mind), eventually he succumed, against Brazil, during the 2002 World Cup, when he was already well on the way to retirement. His “mistake” almost echoing Shilton’s. The psychosis gathered pace and before long was ruthlessly dispatching Paul Robinson, Rob Green and Scott Carson from the England set up. Whether we can really count David James as one of those apparently mugged of his international ambitions by this virulent “catatonia” is questionable, he was more than capable of doing that all by himself, he was certainly a host.

What a…

Enter Joe Hart. Who doesn’t love Joe Hart? You? At the back there? *releases the hounds* What is there not to like? Okay, he plays for THEM, I’ll give you that, and yeah he quite obviously waxes his eye-brows, but let’s not let the superficial cloud our appreciation of one of the best players to happen to the England team in yonks. He SHOULD be captain. What Joe Hart’s talent makes patently clear is this: our goalkeeping crises of the recent past haven’t been ones of hex and hoodoo, they’ve been ones of a basic lack of real quality. The better goalkeepers we’ve had relatively recently, Seaman and Shilton, have been maintained in goal for much longer than they should have because there was no one considered good enough to replace them; no-one with the mental strength to match the physical requirements – and we’ve paid a heavy price.

Goalkeepers have it pretty tough. They will make BIG mistakes. If they make a mistake, the ramifications are generally much more severe than those of their team mates. They don’t simply surrender possession, or give away a cheap free kick; they give away a goal or a penalty. The footballs that make fools of goalkeepers are designed by scientists who supply parts for NASA. Their job is literally a constant battle with Rocket Science. Peter Cech has to wear a head brace just to stop his mind boggling every time he is faced with a shot from distance.

Joe Hart may well fumble one into his own net, or misjudge a cross that could cost us in this tournament. He could do the same in the World Cup qualifiers, or in the next World Cup. It’s something he will have to deal with. The difference is, his mistakes will be exceptions, not rules. You get a strong sense with Joe Hart that he has the strength of character and capacity to move on. Only when Joe Hart is considering hanging up his gloves, and we’re still expecting him to be our Number One, do we need to start worrying about anything like “curses” again.

Check out those brows!

(Before you start, I at no stage promised I was behind any of that curse nonsense.)
