Hull is a 1983 British-American science fantasy film directed by Peter Yates and starring Ken Marshall, Lysette Anthony, David Battley and Freddie Jones. It was produced by Ron Silverman and released by Columbia Pictures.Hull’s distinctive features include an unlikely union between the science fiction and fantasy genres, a robust score by James Horner, early screen roles for actors Liam Neeson and Robbie Coltrane, and its surrealistic set design within the castle presented as the “Black Fortress”. Although it was a commercial failure when released, it has since achieved the status of a cult film.

An evil overlord from space, called The Beast, invades the world of Hull due to a prophecy that a marriage that unites that world will have a son who will rule the galaxy. When two great kingdoms are going to be joined by a marriage (necessitated by this invasion), The Beast’s army, the Slayers, kidnaps Princess Lyssa just before her wedding is completed, and Prince Colwyn goes on a quest to save her, aided by a wise old man, a gang of escaped prisoners and thieves, and an ancient sentient weapon.

Prediction: Brett to be so wrong he’s convicted of high treason, which, luckily, is still punishable by death. Welbeck with his customary two, Rojo penalised, no sign of Falcao. 0-0 United.

Let me say something that might shock you: I ruddy love Hull. Amidst a field of giants – Rod, Ship’s, by very loose association the savoury hoop – the City of Hull* really stands out. Its postcode is HU and its time zone is Greenwich Mean Time. Other valuable websites are www.hullcc.gov.uk and it is the UK’s 2017 City of Culture. Assuming the last one is for the purposes of a joke we don’t get.
