Canvey Island cds, tapes and vinyl: Rachel Turney

Friend of Bifurcated Rachel Turney  (@rachel_jj2011 ) and Deputy Editor of the Football United Blogs Fanzine was popping next door to borrow some sugar, but as she left the house she was confronted by a train station that had appeared on the door step.

The conductor handed her a £1 coin and pointed towards the platform. There was only one train waiting to depart, there was only one destination …

Canvey Island!

(Yes anoraks, we know, are we going to have to go through this every time? You’d have to disembark at Benfleet, as Canvey Island doesn’t actually have a station)

Rachel got off the train and was ushered towards the disused car park where she found the car-boot sale and a stall run this time by someone who looked suspiciously like ex-Manchester United and Bacup Borough player David May. (They must have a rota?!)

As with our last visit the character had a message for Rachel: “Welcome to Canvey Island cds, tapes and vinyl. I’ve got to shift all these for a friend of a friend after a miscommunication over some baby swans, anyhow, won’t bore you with the detail, this post is borderline nonsense as it is … We have every single ever pressed or recorded in stock, and at 5 for £1, you can enjoy picking your 5 favourites of all time?!”

… and this is what Rachel picked and why (in her own words) …

Hey Now (Girls just want to have fun) by Cyndi Lauper

“This was the first single I brought so will always mean something to me. Also think it kind of sums up my view on life, that it should always if nothing else be fun. We only get one shot at it after all.”

In the End by Linkin Park

“This song makes me think back to when I was at school. Myself and my friends, who were always relatively well behaved were going through a bit of a rebellion stage. They were the first band I saw live and it opened my eyes to how good live music can be. It’s not really my kind of music now but it was brilliant when I was a moody teenager. This was my favourite song of theirs by a million miles.”

Never be the same again by Melanie C

“Probably not the coolest song to ever have selected but it means a lot to me because it reminds me of my first serious relationship. I ended up listening to the song over and over again when I first liked the person and wasnt sure how they felt. Just seemed like one of those moments when a song feels like it was written about your life. I have to mention that i also sing a beautiful rendition of the rap in the song!”

I’m always here (Baywatch theme) by Jimi Jamison

“I never get bored of hearing this song. It is such a feel good song and always puts me in a great mood. It reminds me of University, the best time of my life. It was our Uni song. The programme was awful though!”

Dont stop me now by Queen

“I love this song. It’s another one I can listen to over and over again. I can’t hear it without singing all the words and I find it puts me in the mood where I feel I can do anything. It also reminds me of some great times and people from Uni.”

Just before Rachel headed home the mystery David May look-a-like stallholder pointed her in the direction of the old book stall and asked Rachel to pick a book, for free, for the journey back.

 … and Rachel picked …

The Green Mile by Stephen King

“He is my favourite author of all time and I love this book and the film. It’s such a sad story but I’m a sucker for stories with a sad ending.”

…and then we returned Rachel home, via our kitchen, for a cup of sugar, of course.
