Hands up who’s surprised?!
We have rarely played well enough to win this kind of game all season, so expecting it now, when we’re in a particularly deep slump, always seemed unrealistic to me.
All the talk of how we won’t become complacent counts for very little – we aren’t good enough to become complacent. Complacency suggests a misguided or inappropriate confidence, whereas I’ve seldom seen a United side so bereft of it. If – and it’s still a very big if – City do start catching us, it won’t be because we’ve allowed complacency to sneak into our play, it will be because RVP’s goals that have provided the band aid for our first eleven, at times this season, have stopped.
We haven’t been anywhere near as consistently good as our position in the league suggests and if there were more games left, we might very well get caught. There isn’t and we can look at that and be happy to a degree, but I like football for other reasons, not simply the winning.
Here’s to a month of anxiously looking over our shoulder.
